Botox® vs. Dermal Fillers: What's the Difference?
Understanding how Botox® and dermal fillers work differently can help you make informed decisions about your facial rejuvenation plan.
Botox® and dermal fillers are two of the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatments available, but they work in fundamentally different ways. Understanding the distinction can help you make informed decisions about your facial rejuvenation plan.
Botox® is an FDA-approved injectable treatment made from a purified neurotoxin that temporarily relaxes targeted facial muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles. These are the expression lines that develop from smiling, frowning, squinting, and other repeated facial movements. By reducing muscle activity, Botox® softens existing wrinkles while helping prevent new ones from becoming more pronounced.
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are injectable gel-like substances that restore lost facial volume, improve facial proportions, and soften wrinkles and folds. As we age, our bodies naturally produce less collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, leading to volume loss and changes in facial structure. Fillers help replace that lost support, creating a refreshed appearance while maintaining natural facial movement.
In simple terms: Botox® addresses the lines caused by movement, while dermal fillers address the lines and volume loss caused by aging. They target different concerns and work through different mechanisms.
Can they be combined? Absolutely. Botox® relaxes the muscles that create dynamic wrinkles, while dermal fillers restore lost volume. Together, they can provide a comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan. Many of our patients achieve their best results through a customized treatment plan that combines both.
At New England Aesthetics, we don't believe in chasing trends or overfilling the face. Instead, we take a comprehensive approach that considers your overall facial harmony. Rather than treating a single wrinkle or isolated feature, we evaluate how each area of the face works together to create balance and proportion.
Our goal is simple: you should still look like yourself, only more rested and rejuvenated. During your consultation, we'll help you understand which treatment, or combination of treatments, is right for your individual goals.
